PS5 Pro Leaked Specs Reveal 16.7 Teraflops RDNA GPU and 16GB VRAM

An early teardown video reveals that the PS5 Pro will have 16.7-teraflop RDNA GPU, 16GB VRAM and Zen2 processor.

The Sony PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) launch is imminent on November 7 but we have got a early tear-down video from a Brazilian YouTuber Tez. The teardown reveals several new details about its architecture and components, especially around its AMD SoC and GPU.

The PS5 Pro retains the same eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU used in the standard PS5. However, it features a “High CPU Frequency Mode” that allows for boosted speeds of up to 3.85 GHz, approximately a 10% increase, which provides more headroom for demanding games without jumping to newer architectures like Zen 4 or Zen 5.

This CPU upgrade strategy likely helps Sony maintain cost efficiency while focusing on enhanced graphical capabilities, the console’s primary bottleneck in the base PS5 model.

The PS5 Pro’s GPU incorporates AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture with possible RDNA 4 enhancements. The new GPU features 60 Compute Units (CUs) organized into 30 Workgroup Processors, and provides 16.7 TFLOPS, compared to the original PS5’s 10.28 TFLOPS.

The GPU also supports advanced ray tracing techniques, benefiting from a modified Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH8) traversal system. This change accelerates ray tracing calculations by enabling more efficient ray-object interactions, providing a realistic rendering experience with a smoother frame rate.

Alongside its 16GB of GDDR6 memory, the PS5 Pro now includes an additional 2GB of DDR5 memory dedicated to system tasks. The GDDR6 bandwidth has also been increased to 18 Gbps, up from the standard PS5’s 14 Gbps, resulting in a 28% boost in memory bandwidth.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro storage capacity is reportedly 2TB, doubling the base model’s storage, which is crucial for handling the larger file sizes of next-gen games.

In terms of hardware layout, the PS5 Pro makes accessing the CMOS battery simpler compared to the PS5, reducing maintenance time and allowing for easier resets. The console design has also been refined for improved cooling and airflow, which will help maintain system performance during extended gaming sessions.

PS5 Pro is set to release on November 7 and the review embargo lifts a day earlier on November 6. The PS5 Pro is available to pre-order for $699.
